Sawubona Creativity Project: Theatre for Performing Arts and Education is a community theatre located in South Philadelphia. We are looking for Teaching Artist/Teachers Aide to support our theatre programs for kids in grades PreK - 6th grade
Job Status: Contract Position - Beginning September 2025 (Ongoing Hiring)
Rate: $16/hr. Teacher’s Aide Position & $25/hr. Teaching Artist (dual role).
Location: Sawubona Creativity Project, 1626 E. Passyunk Ave #1
Part-Time/Flexible/Varies: Immediate Need - Mondays & Wednesday 2:00pm - 6:00pm
Spring Break: March 30th - April 3rd (8:00am-6:00p)
Summer Break: June 22nd - August 14th (8:00am-6:00pm)
Other Hours: One Day Camp 8:00am-5:30pm (dates vary)
*part time shifts are available from 8a-1p or 1p-6p.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Instruction & Facilitation
Design theatre-based lessons that are age-appropriate and aligned with program goals.
Promote social-emotional learning (SEL) through theatre exercises, improv, storytelling, and group activities.
Curriculum Development
Collaborate with education staff to develop lesson plans and curriculum frameworks.
Create and prepare materials, activities, and resources.
Program Support & Supervision
Safely pick up students from surrounding schools and transport them to the program.
Safely monitor and supervise students at all times.
Provide guidance, encouragement, and support.
Empower students by actively participating in theatre classes alongside them.
Maintain a safe, respectful, and positive environment by modeling appropriate behavior and providing constructive feedback.
Logistics & Operations
Help prepare, organize, and distribute art supplies, costumes, and props for activities and performances.
Support performances and showcases by assisting backstage, managing props/costumes, and ensuring smooth transitions.
Perform light cleaning and organizational tasks (e.g., sweeping, sanitizing surfaces, restocking materials).
Maintain open communication with staff, parents, and program leads.
Assist with additional tasks as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:At least two years prior experience working directly with elementary aged children; ideally in an educational or extracurricular setting.
Background in theatre arts: acting, improv, dance or musical theatre.
Strong interpersonal skills to engage with children and communicate effectively.
Ability to manage multiple tasks, including program support and housekeeping duties.
Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs., participate in physically active tasks and walk at least 10-20 minutes per session.
Ability to remain calm and patient in a busy environment.
Flexible availability, including morning, after-school and evenings.
Successfully complete PA background checks.

Job Opportunity for Teens (Age 14-18) – Assistant Teacher & Flyer Distribution
Sawubona Creativity Project: Theatre for Performance Art & Education is looking for motivated and responsible high school students (age 16+) to join our team! This is a great opportunity to gain experience in education, teaching, community outreach, and leadership while earning extra money.
Positions Available:
Flyer Distribution Assistant
Help pass out flyers to promote our programs.
Work after school hours or on weekends.
2. Assistant Teachers Aide
Support teaching artist during afterschool programs.
Help with activities, classroom management, and student engagement.
Schedule & Hours:
Assistant Teacher: Mondays & Wednesdays, after school until 6:00 PM (approx. 3-6 hours per week).
Flyer Distribution: Flexible – after school or weekends, no more than 4 hours per week.
Pay Rate:
$10 per hour
Requirements:
Must be 16 years or older
Must enjoy acting, improv or musical theatre
Be reliable, responsible, and enjoys working with children
Have a positive attitude and willingness to learn
