Teaching Artist Statement
Theatre arts is a diverse pathway to cultural participation, creative expression, and self-actualization. From, collaboration, advocacy, and community-based work, theatre arts is one of the most engaging and immersive ways to teach and learn. Theatre arts programs that are infused with social emotional learning skills (SEL) teaches vital interpersonal and intrapersonal skills we need for academic and human development (casel.org).
As an advocate, a mental health professional, social emotional learning interventionist, and performer, I have witnessed the value of teaching theatre arts programs infused with social emotional learning skills. When students participate in theatre arts programs such as; applied improvisation, playwriting, storytelling, visual, literary and performance arts, students begin to learn and understand that the choices they make, positive or negative, not only affect their lives but their peers and communities as well. When implemented and practiced, these programs encourage children and adults to develop healthy identities, advocate for themselves and others and make responsible decisions.
