Rent the Theatre

Sawubona Creativity Project boast two levels. The upper level theatre space seats 40 guests seated and around 50 standing. The smaller, lower level can be used to run practices, workshops or be used as a green room for performers during shows.

There are two seperate entrances: one at the front of the venue and another around back. Guests or performers can relax and enjoy the outdoor patio between shows.

There is a kitchen which contains a small refridgerator, ice fridge, coffee machine, water cooler.

Our theatre is BYOB. We encourage all guests to drink responsibly.

Please note: our first floor theatre space is accessible via ramp but unfortunately we don’t currently have an accessible restroom on either floor.

Theatre Rental FAQ’s

What are the booking requirements? All renters must attend an onsite visit, review and sign necessary paperwork. For shows and performances, renter must hold liability insurance.

What is the capacity? Upper level: 40-50 seated guests Lower Level: 15 seated guests

What are the permitted uses of the theatre?

  • Upper Level: special events, theatrical performances, staged readings, dance, music videos, photography, stand-up/improv/sketch shows, classes and workshops, birthday parties.

  • Lower Level: writing workshops, classes, rehearsals, green room (ceiling height is roughly 7 ft)

Are there any restrictions for renting either space? We ask that all events be in accordance with our mission and policy and procedures which can be found here Policy and Procedures and here Our Mission. Any shows outside of that relm should be cleary stated in any marketing material.

What forms of payment do you accept? All scheduling payments are handled via Skedda. Renter must have a valid credit card to place on file through the app.

What is the cancellation policy?  Cancellations must be made via app 24 hours in advance.

What hours is the space available for rent? Monday thru Thursday 6:30pm-10pm.  Friday-Sunday 10am-11pm. Depending on availability. Some daytime hours may be available.

Do you provide staffing during performances? No, renters must provide own staffing.

Does the theatre provide any equipment? Yes. The theatre has theatre seating for 35 people, 20 folding chairs, 2 6ft tables, 1 card table, 2 stages (8ftx6ftx6in) and another that is (4ftx15ft), stage curtains, DMX light board and stage lighting, 2 speakers, 3 microphones, Rockville PA system, green screen, projector and screen (16:9 or 110 inches), 3 smart tv’s.

What about marketing materials and ticketing? You must market and promote your show, develop marketing material, ticketing etc.

What are the rental rates shows/performances, parties, and specialty events? These rates vary. Contact theatre for details. 

What’s the rate if I’m looking for a space to host a one-time or weekly class, workshop or rehearsal? Individuals: Upper Level - $30 per hour/Lower Level - $25 per hour Organizations/Theatre Companies: Upper Level - $40 per hour/Lower Level - $30

How do I set-up a tour of the building? Tours of the building take place Monday and Wednesday evenings between 6pm-7pm. Email sawubonacreativityproject@gmail.com to set-up your tour.
